Located at the southwestern tip of the island of Kyushu, Kagoshima is the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the "Naples of the Eastern world" for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and emblematic stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889. It merged with Taniyama City on April 29, 1967 and with Yoshida Town, Sakurajima Town, Kiire Town, Matsumoto Town and Kōriyama Town on November 1, 2004.

Kanoya (鹿屋市, Kanoya-shi) is a city in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is located in the southeastern Kyushu region in the central part of Ōsumi Peninsula. Kanoya is the most populous city in Japan without any connection to railway services, after the abolition of the Ōsumi Line in 1987.

3．Makurazaki, Kagoshima
Makurazaki (枕崎市, Makurazaki-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on September 1, 1949. As of April 2017, the city has an estimated population of 21,960 and a population density of 290 persons per km². The total area is 74.88 km². It is famous for its katsuobushi processing plants, which produce the chief flavoring ingredient—dried fish flakes—found in Japanese miso soup. About 70 small family businesses year-round boil, cut, dry and smoke the pungent fish, often sending a unique odor of steam, smoke and fish scent across the downtown area and out to sea. Makurazaki is the site of the terminus of the southernmost JR train line in Japan, the Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. The Japanese know the town as the Typhoon Ginza (after Ginza in Tokyo). Each summer many cyclones strike the main islands first in the area of Makurazaki.

Izumi (出水市, Izumi-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The city was founded on April 1, 1954. As of 2017, the city has an estimated population of 52,978. In 2008, the city had a population density of 170 persons per km². The total area is 329.98 km².On March 13, 2006, the towns of Noda and Takaono (both from Izumi District) were merged into Izumi.Izumi City lies at the northwestern corner of Kagoshima Prefecture. 6．Ibusuki, Kagoshima
Ibusuki (指宿市, Ibusuki-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, founded on April 1, 1954. In March 1, 2012, the city had an estimated population of 43,931, with 19,119 households and a population density of 294.82 persons per km2. However the census of 2020 confirmed a population decline to 39,011 and by October 2022 there were only 17,537 households . The total area is 148.81 km2 (57.46 sq mi) and shares a border with Ei, a town to its north. On January 1, 2006, the towns of Kaimon and Yamagawa (both from Ibusuki District) were merged into Ibusuki. Ibusuki can be accessed by Routes 226 and 269 and the Ibusuki Skyline drive. The city's main railroad station is Ibusuki Station. Ibusuki is famous for black-sand spas known as sunamushi onsen and the fine noodle sōmen nagashi.Ibusuki has a sister city relationship with Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

9．Satsumasendai, Kagoshima
Satsumasendai (薩摩川内市, Satsumasendai-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The modern city of Satsumasendai was established on October 12, 2004, from the merger of the city of Sendai, the towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedōin and Tōgō, and the Koshikijima Islands (which consisted of the villages of Kamikoshiki, Kashima, Sato and Shimokoshiki, all from Satsuma District). As of May 2017, the city has an estimated population of 96,411 and a population density of 140 persons per km2. The total area is 683.50 km2. The city has regular Shinkansen services to Kagoshima City and Yatsushiro. The city is also home to Kagoshima Immaculate Heart University, founded in 1994, which has a small population of foreign students. A major employer is the Sendai nuclear power station.

Hioki (日置市, Hioki-shi) is a city in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. As of May 1, 2010, the city had a population of 51,819 and a population density of 205 persons per km². The total area is 253.06 km2 (97.71 sq mi). The modern city of Hioki was established on May 1, 2005, from the merger of the towns of Fukiage, Higashiichiki, Hiyoshi and Ijūin (all from Hioki District).

Soo (曽於市, So'o-shi) is a city located in northeastern Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is near Miyakonojō, Miyazaki. As of April 2017, the city has an estimated population of 37,038 and a population density of 95 persons per km². This is down from the 2006 population data, which was an estimated population of 43,752 and a population density of 112 persons per km². The total area is 390.39 km². Soo is one of the many small cities in Japan that have a steadily decreasing population.

12．Kirishima, Kagoshima
Kirishima (霧島市, Kirishima-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Kirishima has the second largest population of the cities in Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a crossroads for commerce between Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures. It is also the home of the Kagoshima Airport, the terminus for the JR Hisatsu line, and is served by two major expressways. The former Kokubu-Hayato area was designated as a "Technopolis" as high tech industries such as Sony and Kyocera opened facilities in the city. As of October 1, 2020, the city has a population of 123,205 with 58,159 households and a population density of 204.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (529/sq mi). The total area is 603.18 km2 (232.89 sq mi). The modern city of Kirishima was established on November 7, 2005, from the merger of the city of Kokubu, and the towns of Fukuyama, Hayato, Kirishima (former), Makizono, Mizobe and Yokogawa (all from Aira District). 13．Ichikikushikino
Ichikikushikino (いちき串木野市, Ichikikushikino-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The modern city of Ichikikushikino was established on October 11, 2005, from the merger of the city of Kushikino with the town of Ichiki (from Hioki District). At the end of January 2013, the city had an estimated population of 30,551, with 13,505 households. The total area is 112.02 km². The city also celebrates an annual maguro festival.

14．Minamisatsuma
Minamisatsuma (南さつま市, Minamisatsuma-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is on the western (East China Sea) side of the Satsuma Peninsula. As of May 31, 2011, population data, the city has an estimated population of 39,012 with 18,711 households and a population density of 137.71 persons per km². The total area is 283.30 km². The modern city of Minamisatsuma was established on November 7, 2005, from the merger of the old city of Kaseda, with the town of Kinpō (from Hioki District), and the towns of Bonotsu, Kasasa and Ōura (all from Kawanabe District). Shibushi (志布志市, Shibushi-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. As of October 31, 2021, the city has an estimated population of 30,231, with 15,366 households and a population density of 104 persons per km2. The total area is 290.28 km2. The modern city of Shibushi was established on January 1, 2006, from the merger of the former town of Shibushi, absorbing the towns of Ariake and Matsuyama (all from Soo District). 23．Aira Caldera
Aira Caldera is a gigantic volcanic caldera that is located on the southern end of Kyushu, Japan. It is believed to have been formed about 30,000 years ago with a succession of pyroclastic surges. It is currently the place of residence to over 900,000 people. The shores of Aira Caldera are home to rare flora and fauna, including Japanese bay tree and Japanese black pine. The caldera is home to Mount Sakurajima, and the Mount Kirishima group of stratovolcanoes lies to the north of the caldera. The most famous and active of this group is Shinmoedake. Aira Caldera has an underlying magmatic chamber that connects with the Kirishima magmatic system. This has enabled magma from the caldera to feed into the stratovolcano Sakurajima, causing it to expand over time. Thus, Sakurajima has caused a series of disasters such as the eruption in 1914 which killed 58 people and sank the magma chamber by 60cm.

24．Kamō, Kagoshima
Kamō (蒲生町, Kamō-chō) was a town located in Aira District, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 7,311 and the density of 89.94 persons per km². The total area was 81.29 km². On March 23, 2010, Kamō, along with the towns of Aira (former) and Kajiki (all from Aira District), was merged to create the city of Aira. Aira District will be left with one municipality.Kamō is home to the oldest Camphor laurel tree (Cinnamomum camphora) in Japan. The tree is approximately 1500 years old, and stretches 34m across, and 30m high. It was heavily damaged in typhoons in 1997 and 2004. A large hollow, with a diameter of 4.5m, exists inside the tree. This hollow was a favorite resting place for homeless men in Kagoshima until a locked door was installed in April 2000. The tree, fondly referred to as Ōkusu (大楠, great camphor) by locals, is located on the grounds of Hachiman Jinja, a shinto shrine. Every November an autumn festival called Donto Matsuri takes place on the grounds of Hachiman Jinja.

35．Iken
Iken is a small village and civil parish in the sandlands of the English county of Suffolk, an area formerly of heathland and sheep pasture. It is near the estuary of the River Alde on the North Sea coast and is located south east of Snape and due north of Orford. To its west is Tunstall Forest, created since the 1920s by the Forestry Commission and now part of the Sandlings Forest. Iken was part of Sudbourne Hall Estate. It was composed largely of tenant farms and cottages for farm workers. The owners of the estate valued the area more for shooting than farming, and a decoy pond was built at Iken in the eighteenth century. Since the break up of the Estate Iken has remained a "close" village: only a handful of new houses have been built and no council houses have ever been built. In the pre-railway era Iken Cliff was a commercial area used for transporting coal and wheat, and there was a public house near the shore. Flat barges used to sit on the mud at low tide and goods were moved in wheelbarrows. The last heathland around Iken Cliff was ploughed up after the second world war. The population reached a peak of 380 in 1840, steadily declining to around 100. During World War II most of Iken and the neighbouring village of Sudbourne were used as a battle training area in advance of the D-Day landings in June 1944. The inhabitants were relocated returning sometime after the war finished.Benjamin Britten set his opera The Little Sweep in Iken Hall, then the home of Margery Spring Rice, who was one of the founders of the Aldeburgh Festival. Britten, who then lived at Snape, was involved in an unsuccessful campaign to keep open a footpath along the Alde to Iken Church.
